Frequently asked questions
How is my 2027 benefit calculated?
Multiply your current monthly benefit by 1.036. The Social Security Administration announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for 2027 on 14 October 2026; SSA rounds benefits down to the nearest dollar, so your notice may differ by a few cents.
Why is the net amount lower than the new benefit?
Most retirees have their Medicare Part B premium deducted from their check first. The 2027 Part B premium has not been officially announced; the calculator defaults to the 2026 Medicare Trustees Report projection of $209.50 a month, up from $202.90 in 2026. Change the premium in the calculator when CMS announces the official figure.
When does the increase start?
With benefits payable in January 2027 for Social Security beneficiaries, and with the 31 December 2026 payment for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients. The increase is automatic — you do not need to apply.
