Frequently asked questions
What is a good car loan term?
Shorter is cheaper: every added year lowers the payment but adds interest, and lengthens the time you might owe more than the car is worth. A 36- to 60-month term is the range most buyers should stay within.
How much should I put down on a car?
More down means a smaller loan, a lower payment, and less interest. A common target is 10–20% of the price — but not at the cost of emptying your emergency fund.
Does this calculator include tax, insurance, and fees?
No — it shows principal and interest only. Ask the dealer for the out-the-door price (with tax and fees) and enter that as the vehicle price; budget insurance, fuel, and maintenance separately.
